Boccia News

Boccia   Boccia Players

The game of boccia is becoming more popular across the primary/secondary sector with schools introducing the game into curriculum PE and running OSHL clubs.
A competition framework is in place with family cluster schools playing fixtures during a one day competition event, time and venue decided by each family cluster with top two from each cluster competing in the Knowsley Schools league championships at the end of the year and an open competition The Merseyside Schools Boccia championships on 20thJune to be hosted this year at the new Kirkby Sports Centre and jointly supported by Knowsley Sports Development team.
Young play leaders have been targeted to be trained in the game of boccia so they can lead sessions within their schools during playtime or within OSHL clubs.  Targeted secondary pupils are developing their leadership skills by delivering Boccia and setting up competition for KS1, KS2 pupils in their family of local primary schools.  Keep up the good work!

Knowsley Victory

North West secured the victory at the Disability Sport England National Boccia Championships held at Greenbank Sports Academy in Liverpool.

The squad is selected from players across the northwest including Merseyside.

Brendan Farrell, a pupil from Springfield School in Kikrby, is a member of the Knowsley gifted & talented squad and has been involved in this for the past 18 months through links with Sports development and School Sports Partnerships.  Brendan was selected for this tournament through his participation in the Merseyside schools tournament.  He then competed in the Liverpool Open and came first in his classification and age group.  This, along with his training at Fairfield Boccia Club, secured his place in the North West squad.  Brendan, competing for the first time at this level, finished runner up in the competition – which makes him the 2nd seed player in the country!

This year 7 athletes represented Knowsley at the National Athletic Championships at Blackpool. The athletes were selected from their performance at the North West Athletic Championships at Manchester earlier on in the season. All the athletes that represented Knowsley were identified and selected as part of the gifted and talented programme that has been implemented across the borough through the School Sports Partnership and with strong links and input from Knowsley disability Development Team, Sue Gilchrist and Sports Development disability Officer Donna Hall.
Sue went into schools to offer pupils specific training in preparation for the athletic events. This was welcomed by all pupils and staff and helped pupils develop their skills further.
