In September 2007 the Brookfield Sports College were invited to the Next Steps International Youth Conference in Namibia, PE teacher Mr Paul Johnson attended the conference with two year 11 students from the previous academic year, Adam Mason (Head Boy) and Nathan Horan (Youth Parliament member). The visit was as a result of being part of the Dreams and Teams project. Both Brookfield and Dr Lemmer are twinned with each other through the Dreams and Teams project.
Dreams and Teams is Run by the Youth Sport Trust in conjunction with the British Council, Dreams and Teams provides a unique link between British school children and their counterparts around the world.
The programme develops mutual understanding between countries around
the use of sport in helping to develop education. It also develops leadership
skills and cross-cultural awareness in 14 to 18 year olds through sport and
International educational links.
Having spent 2 days at the conference the three then headed to Rehoboth and Dr Lemmer High School.
The PE member from Brookfield and the two students met with students from the school. They worked with 8 classes of Grade 11 students. They worked on communication and co-operation skills, theory and practical sessions of the Sports Leader programme in order to establish a core group of students to deliver the programme. All students learned how to deliver leadership coaching sessions and how to analyse and evaluate physical coaching sessions. By the end of the training Dr Lemmer High School learners had acquired skills to deliver sports activities to other learners. A member of staff at Dr Lemmer High School has been established to continue with this programme.

Also on this visit was Mrs Gill Holland, Headteacher of Westvale Primary School and Marjie Brown, Partnership Development Manager at Brookfield SSP. The Rehoboth link teacher for the ‘Dreams and Teams’ programme had contacted 3 primary schools for Gill and Marjie to deliver a course in ‘Junior Play Leader’. Junior play leader is a successful course run in all Knowsley schools, the course trains Y5 and Y6 pupils to deliver structured and physical activities to younger members of the school. The three primary schools were Ruimte Primary School (800 learners), JTL Primary School (900 learners) and Vooruitsig Primary School (1000 + learners), there is no PE timetabled within the school day at primary school.
Gill and Marjie worked with over 250 Grade 7 learners, pupils aged 12 and 13, over the course of 3 days. From the training a core group of leaders was selected and in turn will utilise their skills on the playground in delivering to younger children as well as train the Grade 6 learners as leaders for the next school year. The training consisted of skills in communication and co-operation, warm up activities, main body physical activities of skill agility and quickness and cooling down sessions. The schools have problems with fighting during free time and want to combat this with focused physical activities.
